- Terms: Qualifying points are earned from revenue flights booked through Southwest, points issued on Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Cards, and base points earned from Rapid Rewards Partners in a calendar year. Purchased points, points transferred between Members, points converted from hotel and car loyalty programs, and e-Rewards, e-Miles, Valued Opinions, and Diners Club, points earned from Rapid Rewards program enrollment, tier bonus points, flight bonus points, and Partner bonus points do not qualify as Companion Pass qualifying points.
What is Companion Pass Perk?
Companion Pass allows you to choose one person to fly with you, free of airline charges every time you purchase or redeem points for a flight. In order to qualify, you must fly at least 100 qualifying one way flights or earn 110,000 points in a calendar year, and you’ll earn Companion Pass for the following full year, plus the remainder of the year in which you earned it.
Earn Points
When it comes to Southwest points, not all points are created in the same manner. Some points you earn qualify for the required 110,000 points while other points do not, so here are the ways you can earn Southwest points to be eligible fr the Southwest Companion Pass.
- Apply for a Southwest Credit Card: The easiest way to earn the Southwest Companion pass is by earning bonuses from one personal and one business card.
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card: Earn 40,000 points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open. Plus earn 20,000 points after you spend $12,000 within your first year.
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business Card: Earn 60,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open.
- Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card: Earn 40,000 points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open. Plus earn 20,000 points after you spend $12,000 within your first year.
- Points earned from paid flights on Southwest: If you’re going to pay for a Southwest flight, you can earn points for booking the flight and paying for it with a qualifying Southwest credit card.
- Points earned from Southwest Credit Cards: Any spending you make with a Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus, Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business, or Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier will qualify.
- Base points earned from Southwest Rapid Rewards partners:
- Hotels: Book a stay through SouthwestHotels.com, you can earn up to 10,000 Southwest points per night
- Rental Cars: When you book your car rentals through Southwest.com, any base points will be counted towards the 110,000 points requirement. Please note that anything marked ‘bonus’ won’t be counted towards the Companion Pass.
Using Companion Pass Perk
- Book a Southwest flight departing from city chosen
- Present valid Companion Pass card with your boarding pass at time of boarding.
- Your Companion’s credentials must match their boarding pass and companion card.
- Board the flight with you companion at the same time.
