Stephen is right – this card is best for domestic use because of the high foreign fees. However, the free room benefits are awesome for leisure travelers! I estimate the value of a Starpoint to be about 2.5 cents, since you can get a weekend Category 2 night (forget Cat 1 unless you are a foreign traveler – there are 4 left in the US) for 3000 SP, and I consider that to be worth about $75. That is far cheaper for road travelers for much nicer properties than are generally available for the same value. Indeed, typically a room at a Holiday Inn Express or Country Inn & Suites or similar will go for about $100 plus tax (so actually around $110-115), and most other road travel hotels are far inferior in accommodation quality. OK, SPG hotels don’t give free breakfast, but you can go to Golden Corral for $9 and get a BETTER breakfast. If there are two of you in the room, you can cut the $110 room value to $92 to get a fair comparison. Thus, SPG, used under my conditions, has value of at least a 2.5% rebate card – hard to beat. (Admittedly, if you don’t spend a lot on this card, the $65 fee eats up some value, but even at $30,000 annual spend it’s a 2.28% rebate card in years you pay the fee. Of course, you never have to if you keep dropping it and re-applying for the SPG business card each year!)

This card charges foreign transaction fees which add up significantly if you travel outside of the USA. Even worse, if you stay at a Starwood hotel overseas they often charge in local currency and won’t let you charge in dollars which means you pay the transaction fees 1-3% and that offsets any points benefits of this card.

RE; car rental insurance.
I will be renting a car in Ireland. What kind of insurance does my Starwood Preferred Guest card cover.
Thanks,
