To maximize Chase Freedom rewards program, cardholders purchase items in the rewards categories designated by Chase which rotates every quarter. You’ll earn 5% cash back in the designated categories up to $1,500 in purchases, and 1% on everything else with no maximum.
Remember, cardholders can only earn 5% for up to $1500 in purchases for the designated categories. Simply put, you’ll get up to $75 in cash back at most in the bonus categories. This may not seem like much, but utilizing their promotion each quarter will put $300 in your pocket each year($75 x 4). I’ve personally made hundreds of dollars in additional rewards each year by taking advantage of all the 5% cash back cards. - You must activate in order to earn the 5% in these bonus categories. Many ways to activate: Online at Chase.com/freedom, Phone Rep back of your card(800 524-3880), In Person at a Chase branch with personal banker, or Email Activation Reminder.
- Make sure to activate by March 14, 2015 to get the 5% cash back for the 4th quarter rewards at Grocery Stores, Starbucks, and Movie Theaters. Keep in mind, the activation is retroactive(all your previous purchases at Grocery Stores, Starbucks, and Movie Theaters will count as long as you activate by March 14th).
- Activation is absolutely free. Cardholders can earn 5% cash back on up to $1500 worth of purchases made in the bonus categories during the quarter. For everything else, you’ll earn 1% cash back with no cap.
- If you are unsure if a particular store counts towards the category, You can call Chase customer service (800 524-3880) or check with their merchants website.
- Do understand that the 5% “cash back” is actually points in their Chase Ultimate Rewards website. You can then cash out the points in the form of cash back toward your statement credit. Each point is worth $0.01 in cash back and100 points are worth a dollar.
