One of the things I learn with car insurance is that you can always cancel your policy at any time. There is no early termination fee and you get your money back pro-rated if you pay it full in advance. Since rates are always changing, you can be sure to find a lower price from all the competitors.

I don’t know about you, but I like my cash in a high interest savings account. Interest rate is going down the drain lately. Chasing rate is no fun, but making an extra $100 or more is worth it. Especially those with more than $10K in cash, you better be thinking about high interest savings account.
The best one right now is Chesapeake Bank Clear Sky Accounts. The 3.75% APY is the highest with only $1 minimum to open for their Savings account. They also have a tiered checking account with 2.50% APY as the lowest rate. There is no monthly fees and the rate is guaranteed until 3/31/09.

If you want a higher rate, consider Evantage or AmericaNet Bank 5.25% rewards checking account. These are available nationwide, but it takes a little work. You must do 10 check card purchases and receive electronic statements. Easy way to meet the 10 check card purchases is to pay your any utitlity bills 10 times at $1.01 each time. Of course, buying 10 candy bars at a supermarket, go to self pay, and swipe each separately. Make sure you pick credit each time when paying. The 5.25% APY rate is only up to $25K.
However, if you have up to $50K in cash, consider West Bank of Iowa’s rewards checking account. The 5% APY rate is up to $50K when you complete 12 signature based debit card transactions, 1 direct deposit put in or 1 direct payment taken out of your account, and receive electronic statement. This account is available nationwide.

I can imagine you or someone you know no longer has a job. Either that or your job security is at risk. If so, then you should take the following steps when losing a job:
- Get unemployment benefits – it depends State to State. Make sure you talk to your former employer to seek for help. Contact your local unemployment office so you can get it ASAP.
- Check health insurance option – your former employer might allow you to be on some cheaper health insurance program for a few months. Check around to see if your the rate is better. Sign up through your wife/husband employer’s health benefits.
- Rollover 401k to IRA – you might have to cash out your 401k out due to liquidity problems. If you can afford, roll over to an IRA.
- Apply for any other benefits – apply for all the government help for people out of work. E.G. Food stamps, housing assistance, local unemployment office, etc.
- Cut all unnecessary spending – cut your cable bills, home phone, eating out, and shopping.
- Job search – send out at least 5 resumes a days. Contact everyone you know about your job search.
- Other options – maybe travel if you have money or go back to school. Since you have more time, think about a career change or learn new skills.
- Alternative income – start a website or ebay on the side.

Anytime a phone company increase a charge, this is a change in contract. Hence, you can cancel your contract without paying an early termination fee. Most likely, they will want to keep you as a customer. You are likely to get deep discounts from Sprint. This includes Pick 3, Free Vision, Free Texting, statement credit from $25 to $100, Free 6pm, cheap phone discount, and whatever you want. All depends on your hustlin’ skillz haha.
A few ways to accomplish this.
1) Call them by dialing *2. Once you are talking to CSR, tell them to transfer you to Retention since they can do everything for your plan.
2) Email them within your account. Explain the situation about the change in terms using the above quote. Then tell them what you want to defray the cost.
3) Use E-chat:
1. Go to Welcome to Sprint – Cell Phones, Mobile Phones, Plans for Personal and Business Wireless
2. Without typing anything into the MySprint Sign in hit the “Go” button (leaving fields blank)
3. This will bring you to an error page saying to “Please Check Your Information” for signing onto MySprint (will ask to sign on again – don’t do it)
4. Rather, look to the left of “Sign On to My Sprint” there should be a “Got a question? Click to Chat.” button.
5. Click that button
6. Fill out required information then hit “Click to Begin Chatting”
Top Bonuses
As you can imagine, credit card bonuses are hard to come by these days. They are being more stingy and putting more restrictions on all bonuses. However, there are two Citi cards that you can get 10000 or 20000 bonus Thank You points.
This citi link takes you to a list of credit cards. It’s the 4th card down like below:
Once you go through the link, there are two options: 1) The Citi PremierPass Card – Elite Level gives you 20000 bonus points after $600 in purchases made within 3 months of account opening. If you don’t want the 20000 points for $200 in gift card, then you can exchange it for an airline round ticket in the U.S. When you travel in the continental United States and Hawaii you can get a companion ticket every single time you buy a round-trip Coach Class excursion-fare ticket with your card for $299 or more. Also, for every mile you fly, you will get equal bonus points to the number of miles of your flight.
There is, however, an annual fee of $75. Lets do the math: $200 bonus – $75 fee = $125 profit. Once you get your 20000 bonus points, go ahead and cash them out for an airline ticket or $200 in gift card. Now call the CSR and ask them to convert to the Regular Citi PremierPass Card. This is very simple. It’s just switching to a different card and there is no hard inquiry on your credit. Why? Because the Regular Citi Premier doesn’t have an annual fee. They will simply credit you the $75. Make sure you tell them that you will only keep the card if they reverse the fee and give you the Regular PremierPass. If they don’t give you anything, you can still cancel and be prorated to the amount of months left on your card. E.G. Cancel after 2 months, hence (2/12) x $75 fee = $63 back since you only have them for 2 months. YMMV
2) The second option is the Regular Citi PremierPass card with 10000 bonus points after $300 in purchases. Here you don’t have to worry about cancelling the card since there is no annual fee.
Bank bonuses are still around even in this economy. You might have to work a little harder to earn them. Here are some of the latest bank bonuses I found:
- $150 Compass Bank – Available in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, and Texas. The first $75 is by using online bill pay or set up direct deposit. The second $75 when you set up a savings plan of at least $50 automatic deposit for 3 consecutive months. Get the Build-to-Order Free Checking to get free basic features. You can get an extra $25 for their anniversary bonus feature making this $175 bonus to stay with them for an entire year.
- $75 PNC Bank – Open a PNC checking account by 1/31/09 and set up direct deposit to get $75 bonus. PNC Branches are located in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Virginia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Ohio, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
- $50 TCF Bank – No direct deposit is required. Simply open a free checking and get $50 gift card. Apply online, but you must be from Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, or Wisconsin.
- $101 Signal Financial – You must be living in Washington D.C. and set up direct deposit. You must open account by 1/31/09.
- $150 Amboy Bank – This bonus only apply to the new Amboy branch at the Corner of Georges Road and 522 in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey. Print out the form and take it to the branch.
- $150 NuVision Federal Credit Union - They are located in the California either Huntington Beach, Laguna Hills, Lakewood and Seal Beach. However, you can join by paying $6 membership to the American Consumer Council. Get $150 by set up direct deposit, set up bill pay, and be using the account for 3 months.
- $100 Flagstar Bank – Open an account with $50 deposit and set up direct deposit of at least $250 per month. Branches are in Michigan, Indiana and Georgia.
- $200 Savings Bond WainWright Bank – It’s really worth $100, but it’s available nationwide. You get the bonus with direct deposit.
- $50 Bank of America – To receive your $50, apply online or go to your nearest banking center. Use offer code AOU261208, and open a personal checking account before February 27, 2009.
