Also make sure you enter the promo code indicated on the email during the application process. You can fund checking and savings accounts with up to $500 each or $1k total! Amex and Discover are accepted! I believe that just about any credit card funding should count as a purchase with this CU. Unfortunately, you used to be able to fund additional/secondary/sub accounts as an existing member with up to $1k per account, but this doesn’t seem to be the case any longer.
If for some reason you don’t receive the bonus automatically after joining, no problem, I will help you contact customer service to make sure you receive it. Also, you don’t need to provide any proof of member eligibility on your account application as long as you sign up according to the instructions that I will provide in my email to you.

i just opened a savings and checking account today (may 6, 2017) using someone’s referral code. i’ll get $120 for opening the checking account and they will get $60. limit of 4 referrals (https://www.starone.org/membership/refer-a-friend/)
FYI- opening a savings account (min balance $50) is prerequisite for opening a checking account (min balance $100), which then allows you to receive your $120 bonus
FYI 2- star one offers high-yield checking and savings accounts (1.1% APY) and no fees. if you keep your checking account balance $5,000 (and use debit card 10x/month), then it’s a “rewards checking” account and you’ll earn 1.1% APY on your *checking* account!! if you have a balance <$5,000, then you'll earn 0.25% APY.
just opened an account online today using someone's referral code (has to be emailed to you). i called customer service multiple times. i rarely had to wait, was immediately connected to someone, and they were always pleasant to speak to. it's the first credit union i've opened an account with and so far i've had a good experience. if anyone wants to open a high-yield checking account and get an extra $120 please email me kittycatboxers@gmail.com and i'll send you a promo code.
I called the 408 number and was told I would have to go to the branch listed with the actual coupon, not a copy or picture of it, to open the account. There is a $120 referral bonus for opening an account online in case you can find someone who already has an account. They get $60. They also said each branch might have their own bonuses available in-branch, but there’s no way to phone them, so you have to go in to ask.
