What is a Routing Number?
Routing numbers are used by financial institutions to identify each other during wire transfers and direct deposits. When a bank receives a check or a transfer, the bank needs to be able to identify where the funds are coming from. Routing numbers are an essential way to help locate the bank and region.
VyStar is still relatively small meaning it only needs the one number to cover all of its members. However, larger banks can have dozens of routing numbers for specific regions or states.
What Do Bank Routing Numbers Mean?
Each combination of numbers within your routing number is significant. The first four digits indicate which district of the Federal Reserve Bank it is located in, and the second four digits identify the bank itself. The last digit is what verifies the authenticity of the check.
For international money transfers, banks typically have a separate SWIFT code. However, VyStar currently does not do international wire transfers.
