A little background about me:
I’m turning 28 with income around 90K. Income would go up with my business ideas and all. I have a bachelor and Masters. Single, no wife or kids.

I have 3 options:

A) Stay on course, build my wealth. House paid off in two years. Career would stall, but very easy and high job security. I can say with confidence millionaire before 40.

B) Take LSAT, go law school next year in the fall. Done with Law school by 32 but $120K in student loans at least. However, prestige factor in my family is a great honor. Future uncertain, but I would like a challenge.

C) This sounds crazy, but my passion is filmmaking. Roll the dice, and move to L.A. Being single and all, you only live once. F*ck it, life is too short. Follow your dreams. If I make it I make it, if not, live without regrets.

I find it very hard to decide right now. It has been on my mind over the last 6 months. My heart is going toward C, but my mind is telling me A or B. To me, money is not an issue. I couldn’t care less if I’m living in an apartment and eating Ramen noodle. Respect is important to me.

How much money have you made from this website?

June 3, 2008 · Filed Under Noteworthy · 9 Comments

I got an email from a longtime reader, Mike, a few weeks ago and it goes like this,

I feel like I’m doing $200 worth of work for $100. I want to make it work, then get others to do it too… but I don’t know…

Thanks though. I’ve made at LEAST $3,000 in the past year–less time than that, really–from your hustles. thanks!

Mike wrote to me about OptionsXpress and how the manager gave him an extra $15 in his account for some troubles with verifying his account. Anyways, his email got me thinking, “How much have you personally made from all the bonuses, saving tips, hustles, etc etc from this website alone?”. When I first started this website, it was an exciting time because everything was new and bonuses were popping up everywhere. Writing was easy and contagious. With less bonuses showing up, I find it more difficult to write meaningful posts about making/saving money.

Currently, I’m going through a big transition in my professional career that would allow more free time. The posts haven’t been top notch lately. Expect to see fresh content coming soon in about a week. I hope to get more ideas from my readers and what you like best. Feel free to contact me via email. Thanks.

Top Reasons to get a Business Credit Card

February 16, 2008 · Filed Under Credit Card bonuses, Noteworthy · 14 Comments

I spoke to many people about credit cards. They don’t feel comfortable about applying for a business credit card. I tell them over and over again, whether you have a home-based business or that you have sold something on Ebay, you can apply for a business credit card. You can put your name as the business name and your social security number as the tax id. Your business is called sole proprietorship and it’s perfectly legal with the IRS. The absolute answer is: Yes, it’s a good idea to get a business card!

Top reasons to get a business credit card

  1. When you charge on your business credit card, the amount is hidden from your personal credit report. For that very reason, your credit utilization is lower hence you credit score stay higher.
  2. Business cards have the best 0% APR on purchases or balance transfer.
  3. For the most part, you are most likely to get a higher credit limit when applying for a business credit card. Make sure to request a high credit line on your application. Household income will dictate how much you get on your credit line for a regular card. With a Business credit card, issuers are willing to increase your credit need for your business startup.
  4. If you have reached the maximum credit exposure across the board with most issuers, now is the time to call them and ask moving your personal lines over to the business side to hide some of this available credit. After your credit profile is updated, then apply for more credit cards.
  5. Your punctual in payments is worth more when it comes to Business credit ranking and less on utilization. They see spending as investment leverage in order to grow your business.

I will review in details on how you can apply for new business credit cards.

When you click on a Business credit card like the American Express SimplyCash, enter your information like you normally would with name, DOB, Social Security, and so on. Fill out home address.

  1. They will ask you to fill out the business address, so simply check the box “My Home Address is the same as my Business Address”
  2. Put your full name as your legal business name
  3. Home phone is the same as business phone
  4. Pick an industry..any will do..Normally I pick retail since I claim Ebaying as my business.
  5. Years in operation: 1-2 years
  6. Federal Tax ID: LEAVE THIS BLANK They will assume leaving blank as sole proprietorship
  7. Annual Business Revenue: $1 - 25000
  8. Put down your name as your business name for the card.

I highly recommend the American Express SimplyCash, since you get 5% cash back on gas, office supplies, and wireless services. Then 1% cash back on everything else.

The above steps are perfectly legal. As long as you have sold anything on Ebay or Amazon, mowed someone’s lawn, painted a house, or washed a car and got paid for it, then you are a sole proprietorship. You do not need to file any paper to be a sole proprietorship. For tax purposes, your Social Security Number is your TIN.

One thing I would recommend is Do not lie on your application. If your business makes $0 so far, then put down $0. Many startup businesses start with $0 revenue. Don’t put your day job workplace as your business. That would be fraud unless you own the business.

The cards below are my recommended list of business credit cards.

Balance Transfer Fee is Cap

  1. Advanta BusinessCard Rewards - 15 months 0% APR on BT. $50 cap on BT fee.
  2. Advanta Platinum BusinessCard - 15 months 0% APR on BT. $50 cap on BT fee.
  3. Chase Home Improvement Rewards - 12 months 0% APR on BT. $75 cap on BT fee.
  4. Chase GM Business - 12 months 0% APR on BT. $75 cap on BT fee.
  5. Chase Platinum Visa Business - 12 months 0% APR on BT. $75 cap on BT fee.
  6. Discover Business Miles - 12 months 0% APR on BT. $75 cap on BT fee.

Great Cashback Business Credit Cards:

  1. American Express SimplyCash: 5% cashback on gas, wireless services, and office supplies
  2. American Express Blue Cash : 5% cashback on everyday purchases
  3. Chase Business Rebate Card: 3% cashback on restaurants, office supply stores, gas stores, and more.

Great Bonus Points/Miles/Cash Business Credit Cards:

  1. Chase Continental Airlines Business: 20K Bonus Miles after first purchase. $85 annual fee.
  2. AmEx Platinum Business FreedomPass: 5000 points = $50 gift card after first purchase.
  3. AmEx Starwood Business: 10K Starwood points. No fee first year.
  4. AmEx Business Gold Rewards: 5000 points = $50 gift card. No fee first year.
  5. AmEx Gold Delta SkyMiles Business: 15K Skymiles after first purchase. No fee first year.
  6. AmEx JetBlue Business: 50 True Blue points = 1/2 free flight. $40 annual fee

Here are the many ways you can get money from the 0% APR Balance Transfer offers from above:

  1. Advanta: Request direct deposit to your checking account.
  2. Chase: They will send BT check or request the BT check with card, make check to yourself, and then deposit into personal checking account.
  3. Citi: Call and request BT check payable to yourself, and then deposit into your checking account.
  4. Discover: Call and request BT checks, write check to yourself, and then deposit into your checking account.

Email from a Reader

December 22, 2007 · Filed Under Noteworthy, Street Smarts · 1 Comment

Here’s an email I just got from Angel:

Hustler- I’m sure you are busy with the holidays, but I had a quick question for you. I recently lost my WaMu debit card, and had to get it replaced. They sent me a new one, but it was with the wrong account. The card I received was with the account that only had $1 on it. The card I lost and was trying to have replaced was with the account that had all my money in it. I know I asked for the card with the correct account, and one of the managers I spoke with even admitted that this issue probably wouldn’t have taken place had he handled the card replacement, however they continue to tell me “[they] did not have the privilege to hear [my] conversation with the other bank teller” therefore they cannot say it is a bank error.

Since 5-10 transactions went through before my card started getting declined, I have a huge amount of overdraft fees, and was only comp’ed two of them. I have talked with 4 different people, a regular customer service rep, a manager, a supervising manager, and lastly the senior manager whom all say the same thing- that they cannot help me any longer. I can’t afford to pay all these overdrafts if I don’t have to, but I don’t know what to do.

The bank is telling me that since the letter they sent me with the new card had the last four digits of the card it was replacing, that it is ultimately my error. I feel like my only error was trusting the bank to send me the right card. Because I don’t use the other card, it was in a file cabinet with my other files. I didn’t remember the last four digits of the card it replaced, and honestly I didn’t notice the letter had that information until I checked the letter after the fact.

Do I have a case to get any more of the charges removed, or should I just pay the fees?

Angel

My reply:

Hello Angel,

I’m sorry to hear your situation. There is no way you should pay any overdrafts fees since it’s their fault. Here is my take on this and how to resolve this in your favor.

First, write a very long articulate letter explaining your situation, and how you want the fees to be taken off since it’s not your fault. Send one to the manager of your local bank, another one to the regional manager. Make sure to mention that if this doesn’t get taken care of, you will send one to the executives of WaMu about this and how you have to pay these fees that wasn’t your fault.

Wait to see their response. If the response is still not in your favor, write another letter telling them that if they don’t take care of this by removing all the fees. You will contact the Better Business Bureau, the local “On your side” local news station, and your local congressmen to make your case on WaMu abusive practice. You could also contact consumerist.com since they can make your case on the net by sharing with their readers.

Good luck,
Hustler

I hope Angel will get a positive result from my advice.  If you are in a bad situation whether it’s fighting a bank fee or credit card fee, feel free to write to me hustlermoneyblog@gmail.com for advice. You will get the “hustler’s angle” on how to deal with the problem.

As much as I like to write about the next “$100″ bonus deal, helping readers like Angel gets me going and makes blogging so much more enjoyable.
